Cutting edge imaging AI is set to change business processes

DALL-E is a new artificial intelligence program created by Open AIi, a technology research lab based in San Francisco, California.

But even more fantastic than this, the software’s moniker combines the names of the animated robot Pixar character WALL-E and the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

But DALL-E is no Dali-esque dream sequence and is a big deal, with the likes of Coca-Cola already clamouring to harness the power of DALL-E in industry-leading ways to improve their already world-class brands, marketing, and consumer experiences.

“We are excited to unleash the next generation of creativity offered by this rapidly emerging technology,” said James Quincey, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Companyii. “We see opportunities to enhance our marketing through cutting-edge AI, along with exploring ways to improve our business operations and capabilities.”

So, what is DALL-E?

DALL-E is an artificial intelligence program that can create images from descriptions when a user gives it a textual command. All you need to do is log in, write a description of your imaginative combination and voila, you get a unique result that accounts for other users’ searches and algorithmic bias.

At its core, DALL-E is the result of a combination of several existing technologies, including Natural Language Processing (NLP), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and neural networks. NLP allows the AI program to interpret and respond to language commands. GANs are used to generate high-resolution images from scratch, and neural networks are used to adjust the images until they match the description given to the AI. Open AI explains, “We’ve trained a neural network called DALL-E that creates images from text captions for a wide range of concepts expressible in natural language.”

At the same time, DALL-E can take cues from associated words to create a real-world image. For instance, if asked to draw “a red car with a Christmas tree on the roof”, DALL-E will generate an image combining both elements into a scene. Known as “conceptual blending”, this is one of the unique abilities of DALL-E.

This technology has many potential applications ranging from art to medical imaging. For example, the technology could help medical professionals accurately generate an image of a rare condition or body parts. It could also be used to help illustrate conceptual ideas such as climate change or the impact of pollution on the environment. Likewise, designers and artists could incorporate AI capabilities into their artwork to help create stunning visuals.

Overall, DALL-E is an exciting development in AI technology that has the potential to revolutionise how we interact with computers. By allowing us to communicate with a computer on a natural language level and blend various concepts into a single image, this AI program can help us create striking visuals and make our data more valuable and meaningful.

Breakout: What are the benefits of DALL-E

  • Allows for the creation of realistic images from almost any text description.
  • Reduces the time and cost of creating, managing, and updating visual content libraries.
  • Enhances the ability of applications, such as virtual content curation and streaming, to rapidly find and utilise specialised visual content.
  • This technology has many potential applications ranging from art to medical imaging.
